About Us

BOS is essentially based on home grown talent which we are proud and privileged to showcase for productions and concerts and in doing so enjoy a great deal of fun and enjoyment often enhancing knowledge and stagecraft along the way.

Since our first production in 1981 the Bromsgrove Operatic Society has grown in strength and popularity. Over the last 30 years we have been entertaining audiences locally and from further afield with shows  from BrAbout Usoadway, UK  including My Fair Lady, Carousel, Oliver, The Mikado, Oaklahoma, Guys and Dolls, Anything Goes Pirates of Penzance, Annie Get Your Gun, Ruddigore and and our most recent production Crazy For You. Our past programme has also included the wonderful wit and musicality from the comic duo Gilbert and Sullivan.

Advanced information on our current programme and details for 2016 can be seen on the What’s On page and if you would the opportunity to be part of the exciting opportunities by being involved in local amateur musical theatre then we will be delighted to hear from you.

We are always looking to welcome new members both on stage and behind the scenes so please get in touch via our contact page either on line or by telephone. info@bromsgroveoperaticsociety.org.uk or 01527 543808.

NODABOS is affiliated to NODA (the National Operatic and Dramatic Association), the umbrella organisation for members of amateur and dramatic societies.

BOS is Back!

Bromsgrove Operatic Society is back! Well, strictly speaking, we never went away. Covid-19 restrictions forced us onto Zoom and, while our Singalongs have been great fun, we were always looking forward to singing together again, even if we might be in for a few surprises when we actually put our sounds together.

Great News:

BOS will be returning to Catshill Methodist Church this coming Monday, September 13th, starting at 7.45pm.

From the BOS Committee:

“With all the disruption, our 40th anniversary has passed us by this year, so in true Olympic & Euro 2020 style, we plan to celebrate it a year late and hold a concert next spring, not only to commemorate this landmark anniversary but also to remember and celebrate all those friends & family that we have sadly lost in recent times.
We are proposing that there will be lots of fun chorus numbers from past BOS performances, along with more modern ones and, of course, a few solos too.

We look forward to welcoming members past, current and new to our launch night. Please also bring along any friends who might like to join us, as we get back together again. The more the merrier!
Time permitting, after we’ve all had a good catch-up, it’s hoped that we may be able to spend some part of the evening rehearsing, so, if you have a copy of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” please bring it along. If you haven’t, don’t worry.

We’d also like to give a mention to those who kept the BOS flag flying during the hiatus by meeting up via Zoom on Monday evenings. Amazingly, they celebrated their 68th and (hopefully) final online sing-a-long on August 23rd. Huge thanks go to our MD and resident superstar Alice, who has shown such talent, humour and patience over the last 18 months. Without her input & enthusiasm we wouldn’t be in a such a good position to relaunch BOS. Thank you Alice!

We really can’t wait to see you all again but if for any reason you can’t make it on the 13th, please let us know and we’ll keep a seat ready for your return.”

Sad News

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of George Brooks. A diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease many years back was followed over a period of time by a number of  health issues, all of which George fought against with enormous courage and fortitude. After being admitted into hospital on 30th November and receiving treatment for Prostate Cancer, George was discharged on 5th January to receive palliative care at home. Surrounded by his loving family George sadly passed away peacefully on Saturday 6th February 2021.

A devoted family man, George aged 83 had been married for 56 years to Anne who along with their four children Philip, Jonathan, Gaynor and Claire and some of the nine grandchildren were able to spend quality time with George where he wanted to be, in familiar surroundings, at home.

It was George and Anne along with a handful of others who were founder members of BOS nearly 40 years ago. Since that day both have been a combined tower of strength in helping  the society grow and develop to achieve real success. George,  a former society chairman, could always be relied upon to give his time and experience for the benefit of BOS and our members.

It is for his on-stage contributions though that will live in the memory for ever as we reflect upon the profound ability that George had to always inject passion and perfection into every performance. West End and Broadway composer & lyricist icons would have been proud of George Brooks. His high degree of excellence in characterisation, voice, stage craft and precisely timed comedy was always approached with huge professionalism, including  playing Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady, numerous other principal roles and of course his many outstanding performances of Gilbert & Sullivan patter songs.  Audiences were always delighted and eager to see George in every production and concert where he entertained with charm and humour that enthralled everyone.

George, with his unique demeanour of warmth and  friendship always gave praise and encouragement on any occasion and was delightful company.  A highly respected very special man whom those of us who had the pleasure to know will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Anne, their family and friends at this very sad time.

Rest in Peace George.

Covid-19

Hello Ladies & gentlemen,
We’re sure that it will come as no surprise to you that, due to the ongoing situation with coronavirus, we are suspending all rehearsals for the foreseeable future
.

This decision has not been taken lightly but we have to think of the welfare of not only everyone taking part but also their families too.

Obviously, we have no idea how long this situation may go on for but we will review our position as and when things begin to return to “normal” and we can once again consider getting together to perform.
At this time, we would like to express our thanks to all those who have been part of this year’s rehearsals so far, particularly Emma, who has been our guiding light once more and Alice who has proved to be a truly wonderful, patient and very talented MD.

In these troubled times, it’s nice to have some good news:

We’re delighted to report that last year’s production of ‘Broadway Cabaret’ has been nominated by NODA for a 2019 Best Concert Production Award in District 5. Whether we triumph or not, it’s a tremendous reflection of all the hard work that was put in by everyone to make that production come together and once more, particular thanks and congratulations must go to Emma, for all her hard work, dedication, sweat, blood and tears, that ensured that it all happened and also to Laurence who once more guided us musically through each performance in his own inimitable style.

We’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all well through the uncertain times ahead of us and we look forward to seeing you all again as soon as possible. Please keep an eye on our social media for any updates. In the meantime, please take care and stay safe.

Best wishes,
Your BOS committee

1st meeting of the New Year

New Year

Apart from our Christmas festivities we have had quite a long break. That changes this coming week as we meet together this Monday, 27th January 2020, from 7.45pm to 9.45/10pm at Bromsgrove School in the Old Chapel. It will be lovely to get together with friends old and new to discover where we are going in 2020.

Please park at the Old Police Station in the Crescent, postcode B60 2DF, and enter the school campus by the North Gate. If you walk towards Routh Hall (visible ahead) and then turn right you will be able to see the Old Chapel, a lighter building, ahead. Alternatively, from the gate, you can take a diagonal across beside the catering building on your right, but there are a few steps that way.

We are currently recruiting new members so if you are interested please come on Monday or contact us via the Fb link below. We need male/female dancers and singers age 17yrs+. No previous experience required but commitment and passion is a must! We have so much fun during rehearsals and we would love for you to join us.

For current updates and info please see the Bromsgrove Operatic Society Facebook Page.

Musings

What an enjoyable show Broadway Cabaret was! Performers, stage crew, volunteers and, of course, the audience were all treated to an experience to remember. We only had two performances, but what talent, energy and enthusiasm was packed into those two evenings.

What was your favourite bit? Go to our Facebook Page or our BOS Members and Friends Facebook Group and tell us what you enjoyed the most from the whole experience.

We don’t know where the journey will take us next, but with the BOS family it won’t be dull!

BOOK NOW

Broadway Cabaret is about to launch on the Droitwich stage. We’re only running for two nights this time, though, so don’t risk missing your place in the audience. Bromsgrove Operatic Society, “BOS” to friends, has a long and distinguished reputation for bringing together talented atists with our paticular brand of humour. Broadway Cabaret is a compilation of some of the most popular and entertaining scenes and music from top Broadway musicals.

This show has been described as “a seamless and exciting journey”, promising to be a colourful spectacle in stage performances that will include numbers such as Wilkommen from Cabaret and Mamma I’m a Big Girl Now from Hairspray . Alongside these, there will be pieces from hit shows including West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, 9 to 5, Me and My Girl, My Fair Lady, Wicked and 42nd Street.

You won’t go away from this unmoved. Emotive material such as “Do You Hear The People Sing?” from Les Misérables will touch those deep places, while the humorous pieces will “tickle your funny bone”.

Broadway Cabaret will be on stage at the Norbury Theatre, Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire on Friday 5th & Saturday 6th JULY 2019 at 7.30pm. Tickets £13 from the Norbury Theatre booking office or BOS members.
